The police in Abuja yesterday said a Comptroller of Customs, Jack Bot, who was arrested in June has been charged with illegal arms deal and granted bail. The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Abdullahi Dikko Inde, had dismissed Bot over alleged gun running and handed him over to the police for prosecution.
Bot, a Comptroller in the Inspectorate Division of the service, was fingered in an investigation into illegal procurement of weapons from the police arsenal.Bot and another junior officer, Shehu Ahmed, who worked with him as orderly in Minna and alleged to have been an accomplice in the crime, were personally handed over to the police by Inde following intelligence report.
The police were said to have allegedly recovered some arms and bullet proof jackets from Bot’s house in Nding village, Plateau State. The police spokesperson in Abuja, Doris England, said Bot was taken to court and granted bail. “He was charged and granted bail. He fulfilled all the bail terms,” England said.
A source in Abuja said the suspects were initially handed over to the FCT police and were detained in the Special Anti Robbery Squad cell in Abuja before they were taken to court.
