Joe Cole Hopeful At Liverpool This Season

Joe Cole still intends to play a key role at Liverpool this season, insisting it is “great” to be back with the club.

Changes appear to be on the cards under new boss Brendan Rodgers, who has made it quite clear he would be prepared to sell the club’s record signing, Andy Carroll. Having made a staunch vow to keep defender Martin Skrtel, and sung the praises of midfielder Lucas Leiva, Rodgers’ desire to retain Carroll has been tepid at best.

Cole, who was sent out on loan under the new regime last season, might well have found himself in a similar boat, deemed disposable as Rodgers attempts to encourage a possession-at-all-costs culture at the club.

However, to the contrary, it appears Cole’s technical capabilities are well valued by Rodgers. Cole featured in Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly, whipping in two wicked crosses from the right, and he says he is enjoying Liverpool life.

“Training’s going well, I’m building up the fitness and it’s great to be back at the club again,” Cole said. “It’s very pleasing. I’ve just trained my best and I’m looking forward to my football.”

He added in the Liverpool Echo: “Everything I have done in my career is in the bank and has been done, but I want to write new chapters. My goal is still the same. I want to help make this club successful. I want to be part of this team and help my team.

“I know I’ve got to win people over. I have spoken with Brendan and, as far as I am concerned, I am here, I am looking forward to the season and we will go from there.”

Cole said Rodgers has made a positive impression on the players. “The lads have all been impressed with everything that he has done. Training has been good and he is just on the ball with everything. You see him in and around the place, he is top drawer. It is a happy camp at the moment.”
